** Nova Scotia paramedics have apparently reached a tentative deal in their contract dispute. That is the word from Global News (CP/June 10) which said the 800 practitioners now have 15 days from June 8th to vote on whether or not to pass the deal. According to the news site, medics have secured a defined benefit pension plan. A strike deadline had been set for June 11.

** A Weeping Water, Nebraska EMT is dead after a Tuesday head-on collision with a pickup truck. KETV (June 12) identified the medic as Weeping Water Rescue practitioner Bob Hanes. Hanes was behind the wheel of the ambulance en route to a Lincoln hospital when the 2002 Ford Ranger crossed the center line into the EMS unit’s path. Syracuse resident William J. Whitlach, 24, died at the scene. Hanes, meanwhile was extricated from the wreck but died upon arrival at hospital. Two other EMTs suffered critical injuries in the mishap. One has been identified as Hanes’ daughter Melissa while the other is James Beau Flint. The patient, meanwhile, sustained only minor injuries in the accident. Police told the newspaper that prior to the crash they had received reports of an erratic driver.
