** Nova Scotia paramedics reach tentative contract deal

** Medic killed in Nebraska crash identified;EMT daughter critically injured

** Nova Scotia paramedics have apparently reached a tentative deal in their contract dispute. That is the word from Global News (CP/June 10) which said the 800 practitioners now have 15 days from June 8th to vote on whether or not to pass the deal. According to the news site, medics have secured a defined benefit pension plan. A strike deadline had been set for June 11.

** A Weeping Water, Nebraska EMT is dead after a Tuesday head-on collision with a pickup truck. KETV (June 12) identified the medic as Weeping Water Rescue practitioner Bob Hanes. Hanes was behind the wheel of the ambulance en route to a Lincoln hospital when the 2002 Ford Ranger crossed the center line into the EMS unit’s path. Syracuse resident William J. Whitlach, 24, died at the scene. Hanes, meanwhile was extricated from the wreck but died upon arrival at hospital. Two other EMTs suffered critical injuries in the mishap. One has been identified as Hanes’ daughter Melissa while the other is James Beau Flint. The patient, meanwhile, sustained only minor injuries in the accident. Police told the newspaper that prior to the crash they had received reports of an erratic driver.

BREAKING NEWS – Nebraska medic killed in crash with pick-up truck

** A New York EMT is being credited with helping to subdue a gunman who shot a police officer in the foot while in the back of an ambulance. That is the word from the Epoch Times (Kristen Meriwether/June 10) which said the early Monday incident played out after suspect Guiteau Idore, 42, was handcuffed while in the rear of the EMS unit around 4:55 a.m. According to the newspaper, Idore attempted to flee when the rig arrived at Harlem Hospital. He grabbed one of the officer’s service weapons and fired twice. Medic Brendon Hernandez then grabbed the gun from Idore and emptied the bullets. The shot officer, meanwhile, was treated and released from hospital. Idore was dispatched to a mental facility for assessment.

** A Checotah, Oklahoma woman is expected to next appear in court June 17th on charges she attacked an attending paramedic. KJRH (June 10) said Rachel Carson, 28, has been charged with assault and battery in relation to the early Sunday incident. According to the news site, EMS was hailed to a Sand Springs Quiktrip around 2 a.m. to treat a woman having a seizure. Sitting on the passenger side of a truck, she threatened to punch a medic as he assessed her. Admitting that she had imbibed alcohol, she hauled off and punched the practitioner when her husband said he would take her to hospital. The blow hit the provider on the left side of the face. Booked into the jail shortly after the incident, she was bailed Sunday morning.

** South Carolina man charged after hitting paramedic, firefighters, bystanders at MVA scene

** Funerals this week for Kentucky air ambulance crew killed Thursday

** A 26-year-old South Carolina man has been hit with drunk driving charges after he struck a paramedic at an accident scene Saturday. That is the word from the Associated Press (June 8) which said North Charleston resident Felix Garcia-Romero was tagged with felony DUI x 3. According to the newspaper, Garcia-Romero plowed through an MVA scene in the early morning hours. Along with the medic, he struck a firefighter and four bystanders. The six, along with another firefighter, were transported to hospital. There is no word on the extent of their injuries.

** Funeral arrangements for a Kentucky air ambulance crew killed Thursday in a crash have been set, with the memorial for paramedic Herman Lee Dobbs to take place Thursday. WKYT (June 10) said Dobbs will be remembered at 10 a.m. at a service at London’s Hawk Creek Church. Fellow crewmember and pilot Eddie Sizemore will be laid to rest today in London, while flight nurse Jesse Jones’ funeral will take place tomorrow. All three died around 11 p.m. when the Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter they were in crashed into a school parking lot. They were preparing to land at the time.
