** Philadelphia man hit by car stabs medics with scissors

** Funeral services held for Nebraska EMT killed in ambulance/pickup truck collision

** A pair of Philadelphia paramedics sustained non life threatening injuries after a pedestrian car accident victim stabbed both of them with a pair of scissors Monday. That is the word form CBS Philly (June 17) which said the 5:45 a.m. incident played out as practitioners were attempting to load the male patient into the ambulance. According to the news service, the man obtained the scissors from the belt of one of the medics. Eventually subdued, the patient was transported to hospital in critical condition.

** Funeral services were held yesterday for a Nebraska medic killed June 11 in a crash with a pickup truck. WOWT (June 17) said the service for Bob Hanes, 51, took place in Weeping Water at the First Congregational Church. A vigil for Hanes occurred at the site Friday night. Hanes’ daughter Melissa, who was also in the ambulance as an EMT at the time of the crash, remains in fair condition in hospital. Fellow EMT James Beau Flint, 46, has now been released and is recovering at home.

** New York medic arrested for beating up cab driver while on-duty

** EMT daughter of Nebraska medic killed in June 11 crash in fair condition in hospital

** A Fire Department of New York (FDNY) paramedic is expected back in court July 25 after being charged with beating up a cab driver while on duty Thursday. That is the word from the New York Daily News (Rebecca Harshbarger/July 14) which said Vincent Johnson, 42, who is a 24 year veteran with department, has now been suspended without pay as a result of the incident. According to the newspaper, Johnson punched the Manhattan cabbie in the face after a heated exchange between the two around 12:50 a.m. The 50-year-old taxi driver was not seriously hurt, but Johnson was tagged with third-degree assault. The arrest comes after two other department employees became subject to media scrutiny. In May, FDNY opened an investigation into an EMT who apparently posted indecent pictures of women on his Facebook page, while an EMS lieutenant resigned after allegedly making racists tweets on his Twitter page.

** The EMT daughter of a Nebraska medic killed June 11 in a crash with an SUV remains in fair condition in hospital recovering from the accident. WOWT (Erin Murray/June 13) said Melissa Hanes, daughter of Bob, 51, continues to receive care, while fellow practitioner James Beau Flint, 46, is now recuperating at home. Hanes was in the back of the EMS unit when the SUV driven by William Whitlach, Jr., crossed the center line around 10:20 p.m. Whitlach died in the impact, while Hanes’ father Bob became trapped as the front cab caught fire. Retired EMT Ron McCown, who happened upon the crash, said it took 2 hours to extricate Hanes Sr. He died later in hospital.

** California teen accused of killing off duty medic pleads not guilty

** Irish medics attacked at drowning scene;yobs also attempt to steal ambulance

** A California teen accused of gunning down an off-duty paramedic at an Oakland intersection April 2 has pleaded not guilty. The Oakland Tribune (Paul T. Rosynsky/June 11) said Christian Burton, 16, registered his plea Monday in relation to the death of Quinn Boyer, 34. According to the newspaper, Burton and five other juveniles swarmed Boyer’s car with the intent of carjacking him. Police allege Burton fired point blank in Boyer’s head as he attempted to accelerate away. Boyer’s car then went down a nearby embankment. He died in hospital 2 days later. Though Burton’s father told reporters his son was innocent of the charges, police said Burton admitted both being present at the scene and firing the gun. Burton was charged as an adult April 18.

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** Police in Cork, Ireland had to be called Tuesday after a pair of medics attempting to attend a drowning victim were attacked by bystanders who also tried to steal their ambulance. That is the word from The Sun (Ann Mooney/June 11) which said the midnight incident played out when a group of alcohol fuelled yobs assaulted both coast guard and EMS personnel near the River Lee. According to the newspaper, additional police were hailed who then proceeded to pepper spray the delinquents. Five people were arrested in connection with the incident. The body of the drowning victim, meanwhile, was not recovered for an hour after the melee. Attempted resuscitation failed, with Michael O’Driscoll being pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital.
