** Australian appeal denied for former paramedic/policeman/soldier who killed wife
** New Brunswick paramedics pitch in to promote road safety in school zones
AUSTRALIA NEWS
** A former paramedic, who also had previous careers as a policeman and soldier, has lost his appeal to overturn a conviction for murdering his wife. That is the word from the AAP (September 2) which said Des Campbell will continue to serve his 24 year sentence in the September 2010 death of Janet Campbell, 49. According to the newspaper, Campbell pushed Janet off a cliff at Royal National Park in March of 2005. At trial, he said the woman fell when she left the tent to use the privy. Campbell`s appeal alleged testimony from a physics professor was prejudicial because the man`s expertise in another trial was found to lack impartiality. Although the appeal judge agreed, Tom Bathurst also said overwhelming evidence proved Campbell did away with his wife to inherit her money. Campbell is eligible for prison release in May 2034.
CANADA NEWS
** In an effort to help returning school children stay safe when crossing roads, Ambulance New Brunswick pitched in Tuesday by parking outside schools with lights flashing. CBC (September 2) said the gesture was intended to remind motorists to slow down in school zones. According to the news site, elementary and middle schools were naturally the focus for the campaign. Ambulance NB Manager of Safety Programs Jean-Marc Dugas also said paramedics hoped their undertaking would cue students themselves to exercise greater safety when in heavy traffic areas.
