** Detroit thief steals cell phone from medics while EMTs in unit treating patient
CANADA NEWS
** A Winnipeg, Manitoba paramedic doing home renovations was badly injured Tuesday when an explosion flattened the house on which he was working. The Winnipeg Free Press (Ashley Prest/September 24) said Fire Paramedic Service practitioner Corey Schroeder suffered both second and third-degree burns in the condominium complex fire that followed the blast. According to the newspaper, the circumstances of the incident remain unclear. Schroeder’s neighbours, however, speculated he was either varnishing a basement floor or using paint thinner when something blew up. A wall blew out and one or more apartments were damaged from the concussive effect.
UNITED STATES NEWS
** A Tuesday theft in Detroit saw a man steal a medic’s phone from the front seat of the EMS unit while the two providers dealt with an alleged heart attack victim in back. That is the word from MyFoxDetroit (September 24) which said the heist played out with the duo treating the woman only briefly before realizing a heist was in progress. Both medics then left their fake patient and pursued the suspect on foot, retrieving the cell phone. The robbery is similar to another one earlier that day in which a thief stole the weapon of an undercover Homeland Security police officer. In that instance, however, the gun was not retrieved.
