UNITED STATES NEWS
** A police investigation in Columbus, Ohio is investigating the possible theft of EMS drugs by either a paramedic or firefighter. That is the word from The Columbus Dispatch (Lucas Sullivan/April 25) which said the missing meds apparently disappeared over a 24 hour period at the end of March. According to the newspaper, vials of both fentanyl and Versed are unaccounted for. A cursory investigation of the 2 stations missing the drugs has shown that drug cabinets had broken locks and drugs records were not always kept up to date. Along with city police looking into the matter, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy have also been informed. Initial scrutiny is focusing on an EMS or fire staff member. The investigation is expected to take several weeks to complete.
CANADA NEWS
** A British Columbia paramedic, who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is lobbying the government to create specific legislation compensating medics suffering from the condition. CKNW AM (April 25) said Lisa Jennings said the law would allow for more immediate treatment and financial help for those struggling with the disorder. Although some provincial assistance already exists, Jennings said it is inadequate and does not kick in in a timely manner. In response to her quest, Jobs Minister Shirly Bond was dismissive. Bond said a fair process has already been put into place to deal with such matters.
