** Newfoundland and Labrador medics protest poor wages and working conditions
** Nunavut woman charged with stealing ambulance
CANADA NEWS
** Private ambulance service paramedics in Newfoundland and Labrador protested poor wages and working conditions Monday at the provincial legislature. The CBC (June 15) said the non unionized practitioners said conditions for rural EMS responders are startling, with many lacking in basic skills to treat more serious patients. Paramedic Andrea Dooley Harris said many medics are underpaid with first responders, for example, making only about $12-13/hr. She said private service paramedics also do not have pension plans or such necessities as uniform allowances. As a result of the protest, several politicians from inside the House of Assembly staged an impromptu meeting outside the building. There is no word on the content of those talks.
** Nunavut police in Iqaluit have arrested an 18-year-old woman for allegedly stealing an ambulance while medics were on a call Friday. The CBC (June 15) said the unidentified woman apparently took the vehicle while practitioners were inside a home. She then drove it through a fence, crashing it in a softball field. No one was hurt in the incident. The woman was tagged with impaired driving and motor vehicle theft. There is no word on her next court date.
