** New York man to serve 11 years in jail for shooting EMT

** A New York man from Staten Island will spend the next 11 years behind bars under a plea deal after shooting an attending EMT while inside an ambulance May 18th. Silive.com (November 9) said Elm Park resident Thomas McCauley, 37, pleaded guilty in October. According to the news site, he woke up inside the EMS unit after first passing out on the street. Worried he might be held in custody, McCauley told police he shot the medic to escape. EMT Richard McMahon, who continues to undergo physical therapy, sustained a serious wound to his shoulder in the incident. Formal sentencing for McCauley, meanwhile, is set for Thursday.

** Fire, EMS group in Washington D.C. suing over facial hair ban

** An EMS and Fire group in Washington D.C. are apparently suing the District over a facial hair prohibition. That is the word from Fox 5 DC (November 9) which said four providers claim the city’s dictate is violating their rights. According to the news site, all four men wear beards due to their Muslim or Jewish faiths. Their suit cites a federal judge’s 2007 decision allowing the wearing of beards for religious adherents. DC EMS, which has not commented on the matter, began enforcing the beard ban in 2020 when the COVID pandemic began. The litigants claim their incomes were impacted after being placed in office jobs instead of in the field.

** Trial set for Welsh Ambulance Service medic charged in driving death of patient

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** A trial date has been set for next May for a Welsh Ambulance Service medic accused of causing the driving death of a patient in April of 2021. That is the word from the BBC (Nov 7) which said Emrys Roberts, 61, who resides in Gwynedd, appeared in court Tuesday to face charges related to the demise of Janet Winspear, 76. According to the news site, Roberts, who has been tagged with careless driving, has been given unconditional bail pending the trial. He has denied any wrongdoing in the incident.
