** 10 homes in Wales account for 1000 EMS call-outs in last year
** New York training more staff to give Narcan
UNITED KINGDOM NEWS
** Welsh Ambulance Service EMS units are contending with a ridiculous number of frequent flyer callers. That is the word from The Daily Post (Alex Hickey/May 6) which said a new report shows one home in Colwyn Bay, for example, requested an ambulance at least one time every day for the entire year between March 2013 and February 2014. Only 1/3 of the time did a patient transport result. Not an isolated occurrence, the information showed that just 10 homes accounted for 1,000 ambulance calls or one every three days. The news comes at a time when the latest response stats show the service lagging behind once again. In the last 21 months, targets have been missed 20 times. Shadow Minister of Health and Social Services Darren Millar said the abuse endangers lives. A spokesman for the ambulance service, meanwhile, said while the calls are a nuisance, the majority of help hails are legitimate and necessary.
UNITED STATES NEWS
** An increasing number of New York EMTs are being trained to administer Narcan for drug overdoses. NY1 (Erin Billups/May 6) said the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) has now announced that all basic level EMTs, as well as all engine companies would be trained to give Naloxone. Previously only paramedics gave the drug, with stats showing it was administerd 2,800 times in 2013 and over 700 times so far this year. By the end of June, more than 3,000 FDNY members will be certified to give Narcan.
