** Former British combat medic brandishing gun wounded in shooting with police

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** A Runcorn man shot by police Wednesday after brandishing a toy gun was a former British army combat medic with mental issues. That is the word from the Liverpool Echo (Oliver Clay/Jenny Kirkham/August 13) which said the unidentified man, who served in the military for 22 years, apparently underwent surgery for his injuries and continues to recover in hospital. According to the newspaper, police attended the man’s address for a wellness check around 1 p.m. Once on-scene, they noticed the man holding what was later found to be replica rifle. They fired two shots at him after he failed to put the weapon down. As is standard in all police shootings, an investigation has now begun into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the officers’ firearms. Police are asking witnesses and those with video footage to come forward.
