** New York medics and firefighters being trained to help ensure homeless find shelter

UNITED STATES NEWS

** EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters in New York City are being mobilized to help ensure the homeless have shelter and appropriate resources. AM New York (Robert Pozarycki/November 14) said some 15,000 emergency workers will be involved in the plan, with 3,000 other city employees taking part. According to the news site, training will be given to teach medics and firemen to observe and report on unsheltered individuals. Reporting will be done via a 311 app overseen by the Department of Homeless Services and the police force. Along with assessing and responding, the 311 workers will also compile stats on homelessness in the city. Mayor Bill De Blasio said Outreach NYC will hired an additional 110 employees to assist in the goal of getting the homeless into transitional and permanent homes. New York’s approach to aiding street people has steadily increased since 2013 when $45 million was dedicated to related programs. In 2019, the number is $140 million. Compliance with the city’s efforts, is, however, voluntary.
