** Queensland family in Australia wins suit after daughter brain damaged when medic gave her wrong med

AUSTRALIA NEWS

** A Queensland appeals court has found a paramedic and his ambulance service negligent after a female patient was injected with the wrong drug while in the midst of an asthma attack. 9 News (AAP/May 10) said Jennifer Leanne Masson, 25, was given salbutamol instead of adrenaline when she turned blue and went into respiratory distress in 2002. Brisbane Court of Appeal heard Thursday that adrenaline should have been given immediately to clear her airway. The Brisbane Times (Aaron Bunch/May 10) said Masson suffered severe brain damage as a result of the poor treatment and died in 2016 after years in a vegetative state. The new ruling overturns a 2018 decision that denied $3 million in compensation to the family. The medic’s actions have now been deemed negligent because he did not comply with Queensland Ambulance Service drug protocols. The actual compensation amount awarded to the family will be decided upon after submissions are filed within 28 days.
