** Illinois man charged in fatal ambulance crash

** An Illinois man from La Porte County has been charged with reckless homicide, as well as other tags, in relation to a February 15th ambulance accident in which the patient being transported died. That is the word from ABC57 (Melissa Hudson/April 12) which said Chesterton resident Jeffrey J. Bilyak, 47, stands accused of causing the 12:53 p.m. crash while intoxicated. According to the news station, Bilyak’s Toyota Tundra pickup truck passed a northbound semi while on US 421 and hit the southbound EMS unit head-on. Although heavy fog may have been one factor in the crash, a subsequent check of Bilyak’s blood alcohol level put it at .17. Killed in the mishap was patient Heather A. Widing. Along with the above mentioned charge, Bilyak has also been tagged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury x 2. Bilyak voluntarily surrendered to police Wednesday.
