** One UK ambulance service sees 1 in 4 medics off on stress leave over last year

UNITED STATES NEWS

** An off-duty Fire Department of New York (FDNY) EMT is dead after crashing his motorcycle on a city bridge Saturday. That is the word from PIX 11 (Jaleesa Baulkman/September 30) which said Kevin Liang, 27, died around 7 p.m. on the Kosciuszko Bridge after striking another vehicle. The car immediately fled the scene. Police have put out a public alert to find the driver who may have caused the crash during a lane change. Funeral services for Liang are pending.

UNITED KINGDOM NEWS

** Nearly 1 in 4 paramedics at the East Midlands Ambulance Service have taken more than a month off for stress or anxiety problems in the last year. The Burton Mail (Paige Oldfield/October 1) said the mental health sick time is the highest for any prehospital service in the country. In the past financial year across England, some 86,668 such days were lost in EMS. GMB National Officer Kevin Brandstatter said medics are in the midst of a stress and anxiety epidemic. Brandstatter said overwork and underpay are contributing to the problem. He also said increasing the retirement age to 68 is similarly responsible.
