UNITED STATES NEWS
** December 10th has been set as the trial date for a South Ogden, Utah ambulance medic charged with negligent homicide in a July 12, 2012 fatal accident. The Salt Lake Tribune (Jessica Miller/July 18) said Sean Reed Stephens-Applonie, 29, will likely be tried over a five day period. Stephens-Applonie pleaded not guilty in relation to the death of Arline H. Logan, 88. According to the newspaper, Stephens-Applonie was behind the wheel of his lit up ambulance when it plowed into Logan’s Buick at an intersection. The EMS unit then hit two stopped cars. Logan had a green light at the time. She died shortly afterwards at the Ogden Regional Medical Center. Stephens-Applonie, meanwhile, was not injured in the accident. Three other medics were treated and released. A pre-trial conference is set for the case November 6.
** EMS in Detroit, Michigan continues to deteriorate, with the city’s bankruptcy filing Thursday indicating 66 per cent of ambulances are out of service. That is the word from the Wall Street Journal (Mike Cherney/July 18) which said the figure is just one startling stat released. According to other numbers, the troubled area has more than 100,000 creditors and $18 billion in accumulated obligations. State Governor Rick Snyder said the decision to declare bankruptcy comes after 60 years of steady decline in Detroit. Snyder said the only way to improve the lives of citizens was to draw a clean slate to restructure and reinvent current services.
