** Ottawa to put medics in ERs

** Ohio medic charged with stalking

CANADA NEWS

** In an effort to release ambulances from ERs faster, Ottawa has decided to place paramedics at emergency rooms. That is the word from CBC (December 13) which said city council approved the tactic Wednesday. Expected to start sometime around summer, the pilot comes at a time when practitioners are being detained at hospitals for an average of one hour following drop-offs. In addition to ER providers, the city council also agreed to subsidize the hiring of 19 additional paramedics. A further 19 providers will be hired through provincial grants.

UNITED STATES NEWS

** A Canton, Ohio paramedic, already accused of stealing from a patient, has now been tagged with stalking charges. The Canton Repository (Edd Pritchard/December 13) said Plain Township practitioner Robert S. Johnson, 37, turned himself into police Wednesday. According to the newspaper, the initial charges related to an August 8th call in which Johnson allegedly lifted the wallet of a dying male patient. His ex-girlfriend alerted police to the theft after moving out of their residence. Johnson then repeatedly called and visited her until police were called November 13. Pending the outcome of the case, he remains on paid leave.
